Exception Instructions for Classic Quizzes

If you want to provide students with an additional attempt, or if you want to provide students with extended time for an approved Access Center accommodation, please follow the steps outlined below.

  1. In the Canvas course space, navigate to the Quizzes area and select the name of the quiz that you would like to add an exception for.
  2. On the Quiz Details page, select Moderate This Quiz from the Related Items list. Note: The Moderate This Quiz option will only be visible once the quiz has been published.
  3. You will see a list of the enrolled students on the Moderate Quiz page.
    1. Use the checkbox next to the student’s name to select the student(s) being granted exceptions. Note: The same exception will be added to all selected students.
    2. Once you have selected the relevant student(s) select the Change Extensions for [#] Selected Students link.
  4. The Student Extensions pop-up window will open, where you can adjust the settings to grant exceptions for the selected students. Note: When adding extended time accommodations, please follow step B listed below. In most cases, extra attempts do not need to be adjusted for extended time accommodations.

    1. Extra Attempts – Here you can change the number of attempts that a student is allowed. Enter the number of additional attempts that you would like to allow the student. For example, if a student is allowed one attempt and you would like to grant an extra attempt, enter 1 for the number of extra attempts. Note: The Extra Attempts field is only available for quizzes that have a limited number of attempts.
    2. Extra time on every attempt – Here you can change the amount of time that a student has to complete the quiz. Enter the number of extra minutes that the student has to complete the quiz. For example, if the original time limit is 30 minutes and a student is allowed double time, enter 30 for the extra time. Note: The Extra time field is only available for quizzes that have a timer set.
  5. Once you have set the exception(s) as desired, select Save for the exception(s) to take effect.

If you want to grant students a due date exception or access to a quiz before or after the availability dates established for the rest of the class, please follow the steps outlined below.

  1. In the Canvas course space, navigate to the Quizzes area and select the name of the quiz that you would like to add an exception for.
  2. On the Quiz Details page, select the Edit button.
  3. On the Edit Quiz Details page, scroll down to the Assign section and select the Add button.
  4. A new Assign section will appear, where you can adjust the settings for specific student(s).
    1. Assign to – Here you can specify the student(s) that you would like to add an availability exception for.
    2. Due – Here you can indicate a new due date if desired. When adding exceptions for availability dates, the due date does not have to be updated. If students submit a quiz after the due date, the submission will be marked late.
    3. Available from – Here you can indicate the date that the quiz should become availability for the student.
    4. Until – Here you can indicate the date that the quiz should stop being available for the student.
  5. Once you have set the exception(s) as desired, select Save for the exception(s) to take effect.
